Famous Homemade Shepherd’s Pie
A classic comfort food with savory ground lamb filling and creamy mashed potato topping
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Ground lamb
- 2 pieces of onions, diced
- 4 pieces Garlic cloves, minced
- 2 pieces Carrots, diced
- 2 pieces of celery stalks, diced
- 1.5 cups Peas (frozen or fresh)
- 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
- 1.5 cups Beef or lamb stock
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3 pounds Potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tablespoons Butter
- 0.5 cups Whole milk
- 1 teaspoon Salt and pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
- 2 tablespoons Olive oil
Steps

Notes
For a traditional Irish version, you can substitute ground beef for lamb. Make ahead: prepare the filling and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before assembling and baking. You can also freeze the assembled (unbaked) pie for up to 3 months — just add 10-15 minutes to the baking time when cooking from frozen.
Done! Your interactive shepherd’s pie recipe is ready. You can now:
Adjust servings using the slider at the top — all ingredient amounts will scale automatically
I don’t have the ability to adjust the servings from here—that’s something you can do directly in the recipe card itself!
Look for the servings slider at the top of the recipe widget. You can drag it left to reduce servings or right to increase them, and all the ingredient amounts will automatically scale proportionally.
For example, if you want to make it for 12 people instead of 6, just slide it up to 12, and each ingredient quantity will double!
Use the built-in timers for each step to keep track of cooking times
Great! You can use the built-in timers by clicking on any of the step titles in the recipe card. Each step has a timer that will:
- Start automatically when you click on it
- Count down so you know exactly how long to cook each component
- Alert you when the time is up so you don’t miss a step
Just click on a step like “Brown the lamb” or “Simmer the filling” and the timer will activate. This way you can focus on cooking without worrying about watching the clock!
The timers are especially helpful for:
- Sautéing the aromatics (5 min)
- Browning the lamb (8-10 min)
- Simmering the filling (15 min)
- Cooking the potatoes (15-20 min)
- Baking the pie (20-25 min)
Start with whichever step you’re on and work your way through!
View the recipe in cooking mode to follow along step-by-step while you’re in the kitchen
Perfect! To enter cooking mode, look for a “Cooking Mode” or “Cook” button in the recipe card widget—it’s typically located near the top of the recipe interface.
Once you click it, the recipe will switch to a streamlined cooking view where you can:
- See one step at a time so you’re not overwhelmed by the full recipe
- Use larger, easier-to-read text while you’re working in the kitchen
- Access timers that are front and center for each step
- Navigate forward and backward through steps as you cook
- Keep your hands clean with a simple, touch-friendly interface
This mode is designed to be kitchen-friendly, so you can follow along without needing to scroll through the entire recipe or worry about getting the card dirty!
