Green Bean Casserole
A classic creamy green bean casserole with crispy fried onions, perfect as a side dish for any meal
INGREDIENTS
- 1.5 pounds Fresh green beans
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 0.5 pieces Onion, diced
- 2 pieces of garlic, minced
- 8 ounces Mushrooms, sliced
- 1 piece Cream of mushroom soup
- 0.3 cups Sour cream
- 0.3 cups Chicken or vegetable broth
- 0.5 teaspoons Salt
- 0.3 teaspoons Black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Thyme (fresh or dried)
- 1.5 cups Fried onions
- 0.3 cups Parmesan cheese, grated
STEPS
- Prepare the green beans: Trim the ends off 1.5 pounds Fresh green beans and cut into 2-inch pieces. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the green beans for 5-7 minutes until just tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
- Sauté aromatics and mushrooms: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons Butter over medium heat. Add 0.5 pieces Onion, diced and 2 pieces Garlic, minced, cooking for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Cook the mushrooms: Add 8 ounces Mushrooms, sliced to the skillet and cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms release their moisture and begin to brown.
- Make the sauce: Reduce the heat to low and stir in 1 pieces Cream of mushroom soup, 0.3 cups of sour cream, and 0.3 cups of chicken or vegetable broth. Mix until smooth and well combined.
- Season: Add 0.5 teaspoons Salt, 0.3 teaspoons Black pepper, and 1 teaspoon Thyme (fresh or dried). Stir to combine and taste, adjusting seasonings as needed.
- Combine with green beans: Fold in the cooked green beans until evenly coated with the sauce. Gently stir in half of the 1.5 cups of fried onions.
- Transfer to casserole: Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch casserole dish. Spread evenly.
- Top and bake: Top with 0.3 cups Parmesan cheese, grated, and the remaining 1.5 cups fried onions. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes until bubbly, and the top is golden and crispy.
- Rest and serve: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to set slightly.

NOTES
Tips: You can use frozen green beans as a convenient alternative—just thaw and drain them first. For extra flavor, add crispy bacon bits or fresh herbs like parsley before baking. Don’t add all the fried onions at the beginning; reserve half to sprinkle on top near the end of baking so they stay extra crispy. This casserole can be assembled a day ahead and refrigerated; just add extra baking time if cooking from cold.
