When it comes to soda fans, everyone has their staunch preferences. Maybe you’re an avid Coca-Cola drinker and can’t stand it when a restaurant only serves Pepsi—or you always opt for Diet Coke over regular. Perhaps you’re loyal to bottles over cans. Or, if you’re like me, your favorite mid-day pick-me-up is a tall, icy, crispy fountain Coke from McDonald’s, which is hands down the perfect drink—or so I thought.
I was under the impression that no other drive-thru or gas station fountain could top the Golden Arches, but diehard Buc-ee’s fans say that the chain’s in-house line of soda isn’t just comparable to, but better than, your average beverage.
What Makes Buc-ee’s Fountain Sodas So Good
In case you’re not from the South or Midwest (or aren’t familiar with the chain’s iconic beaver-toothed mascot), Buc-ee’s is a cult-favorite convenience store chain with plenty of in-house products, from its signature Beaver Nuggets to Peanut Butter Blast Trail Mix. And while dirty soda fans love the gas station vibes for a road trip, many customers agree that, whether or not you’re doctoring up your drink, Buc-ee’s line of sodas may just be better than your go-to fountain drink.
In addition to more unique flavors, like Sarsaparilla or True Blue Cream Soda (which fans say “will change your life“), the chain also offers your usual lineup of soft drinks, like Buc-ee’s Cola, Raspberry Tea, and Root Beer. “Their root beer is one of my favorites!” wrote one fan on a Reddit thread about the chain’s in-house soda line, which includes nearly 20 options.
On another Reddit thread asking customers for their go-to Buc-ee’s soda, Redditors agreed that Root Beer is the way to go. “Also, if you’re ever in a Buc-ee’s and you see they have Pineapple Cream Soda, get it,” someone added. “It’s godly.”
But fans also adore Buc-ee’s flavors that are close copycats for the big names in soda. “I love the Buc-ee’s Cola,” wrote one Redditor. Some Redditors suggest that “the Buc-ee’s brand of Coke tastes exactly the same” as your typical Coca-Cola, while others argue that Buc-ee’s Cola is “the best!” One Redditor even went so far as to write, “If I could buy their regular cola online, I’d never buy Coke ever again.” And another Redditor added that Buc-ee’s sodas “have a superior taste [to] anything that Coke or Pepsi is currently selling.”
In addition to being remarkably similar (or perhaps better) than major companies Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, Buc-ee’s fans also compare the chain’s line of sodas to a fast food chain beloved for its beverages: Sonic. On Reddit, someone argued that “Blue Coconut is Sonic Ocean Water,” which is a proprietary creation from the fast food chain featuring Sprite.
Another echoed the comparison to Sonic, writing that Buc-ee’s Cherry Limeade is “just as good as, if not better than, a Sonic Cherry Limeade.” Restaurant comparisons aside, one Redditor praised the drink, joking that the “cherry lime flavor is the nectar of the gods.”
As a soda fiend (and daily Diet Coke drinker), I’m pretty intrigued by the rave reviews about Buc-ee’s line of sodas. Despite the fact that my nearest Buc-ee’s location is 700 miles away, I’m already planning my next road trip—because if the fandom is any indication, I’m going to need to try Buc-ee’s Diet Cola and Cherry Limeade for myself ASAP.
